Somalis ‘made to view executions’

Posted in clothing on November 28th, 2009 by admin – Be the first to comment

Hundreds of people in Somalia have been forced to watch Islamist militants executing two people accused of spying.
People in Merca said al-Shabaab militia patrolled the town with loudspeakers, demanding they attend the executions.
The militants also ordered schools to close for the day as they were keen for children to watch the two men being shot dead by a firing squad.
Most of those at the execution, on a patch of open ground, are reported to have been women and children.
It is becoming something of a pattern for al-Shabaab to encourage young people to engage in violence.
It recently organised a quiz for young men in the southern town of Kismayo.
The prizes included AK-47 assault rifles, hand grenades and anti-tank mines.
The aim, said al-Shabaab, was to stop young men from wasting time, and to focus on important things like defending their territory and their religion.
At the prize-giving ceremony, which was attended by hundreds of people, the militants urged parents to teach their children to handle weapons at an early age.
Somali children’s rights groups say al-Shabaab is intent on brainwashing the young to believe in violent Islamism.
In this way, it can ensure it has a steady supply of recruits, ready to fight for its aim of establishing extreme Islamist rule, not only in Somalia but far beyond its borders.

Iraqi shoe thrower welcomed home

After leaving prison, Muntadar al-Zaidi went straight to al Baghdadiya – the TV station he was working for at the news conference where he threw the shoes.
Addressing his own news conference, he said he had been tortured: “At the very moment that the Prime Minister Mr al-Maliki was on TV saying he wouldn’t rest until he was sure I was sleeping on a comfortable bed, I was being hideously tortured.
“I was being given electric shocks, and being hit with cables and steel roods… I was left handcuffed and immersed in water until dawn in cold weather. I demand that Mr al-Maliki apologise for concealing the truth.”
An advisor to the prime minister told the BBC that the torture allegation should be investigated.
And a spokesman for the ministry of human rights told us they do not believe he was tortured in the jail where he spent the past nine months, as it is a “detention centre with acceptable human rights standards”.
They concluded that, if he was tortured, it must have happened soon after he was arrested and before his trial.
At his news conference, Mr Zaidi offered an explanation for his shoe-throwing protest.
“I’m not a hero,” he said, “but when I saw the war criminal Bush, I wanted to show my resentment – after six years of occupation, this killer came to my country smiling and bragging about victory.”
He went on: “When I saw the pictures of the dead, it kept me awake at night.”
He also addressed objections that journalists should throw questions at presidents, and not shoes: “If I gave the profession of journalism a bad name, I apologise,” he said.

South Waziristan

South Waziristan, a tribal district in Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata), is the first significant sanctuary Islamic militants carved for themselves outside Afghanistan after 9/11. Militants driven by US troops from the Tora Bora region of Nangarhar province in late 2001, and later from the Shahikot mountains of Paktia in early 2002, poured into the main town, Wana, in their hundreds. They included Arabs, Central Asians, Chechens, Uighur Chinese, Afghans and Pakistanis. Some moved on to urban centres in Punjab and Sindh provinces. Others slipped back into Afghanistan or headed west to Zhob and Quetta and onwards to Iran. But most stayed back and are fighting the Pakistani army.
Unofficial estimates by informed circles put the current number of these foreign fighters at “several hundred”. They have concentrations in parts of South and North Waziristan and Bajaur in Fata region, and have also fanned out to conflict zones in Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province (NWFP), such as Swat and Buner.
The eastern half of South Waziristan is inhabited by the Mehsud tribe and the main militant commander here is Baitullah Mehsud. He heads perhaps the largest militant group in Pakistan, with an estimated strength of more than 15,000 armed men, although the “hard core” of his fighters is much smaller.
The western half, along the border with Afghanistan, is Ahmedzai Wazir territory where Maulvi Nazir commands roughly 8,000 to 10,000 militants. Again, most of these cannot be considered battle-hardened and whether they would fight to the last is unclear.
The Mehsuds only live on the Pakistani side, while the Wazirs inhabit both sides of the border. This partly explains the direction the two commanders have taken over the last few years. Maulvi Nazir’s men have largely focused on the war in Afghanistan, and have only recently had some problems with Pakistani forces, apparently due to continued missile strikes by suspected US drones which they believe have tacit Pakistani support.
Baitullah Mahsud has been fighting Pakistani forces since 2006, when he set up Tehrik Taliban Pakistan (TTP), an umbrella organisation for anti-Pakistan groups operating in Orakzai, Bajaur and Swat regions.
Early this year, Baitullah Mehsud and Maulvi Nazir entered into a three-way partnership with another ethnic Wazir commander, Hafiz Gul Bahadur, who heads the militants in neighbouring North Waziristan. Their aim is to organise joint defence if they come under attack. Pakistan says its military is now preparing for a full-scale assault on Mehsud forces.

How Can I Buy Coins on eBay Without Getting Ripped Off?

Posted in clothing on November 27th, 2009 by admin – Be the first to comment

EBay is the topic of many conversations in the coin collecting community. Amongst the collector community is the question of can I buy coins on eBay without getting
ripped off. The answer is unequivocally YES. The caveat is to proceed with caution. In this article we will explore the things to look for to find honest sellers so
that you can protect your self. Here are several tips to keep you from getting ripped off and bidding on auctions that are with worthy sellers

User Feedback: While it seems obvious you want to deal with someone who has a high user feedback, the fact is that this area can be quite misleading. How? Many people
who buy coins and then feel ripped off are for some reason reluctant to leave negative feedback for fear they will also receive negative feedback. When looking for a
reputable coin dealer on eBay, feedback ratings can be a useful guide, but dig a little deeper. A dealer/seller with 10,000 positive feedbacks does NOT mean s/he is a
good dealer. Read the feedback. Not just the negative feedbacks but the positive as well. Many positive feedback entries will have underlying negative information in
them that could clue you into how the dealer treats others or the quality of the merchandise s/he sells. For example, a recent positive feedback entry for a seller
stated: Grading seems off mark but happy with deal and easy to work with CO. Thanks. Another positive feedback for a different seller stated: Not quite as expected but
OK for the price. These particular dealers have thousands of positive ratings but the ratings are rife with negative connotations in the positive feedback. Check for
statements such as slow shipping, not packaged well, not like picture, not as described, etc.

Dealer Business or One Time Seller: Is the seller you are looking at a long-time eBay seller or someone that is trying out eBay to sell their inherited collection?
Actually, this area may not make much difference as there are some long-time dealers who I think are crooks while I have been able to pick up some good deals from new
sellers. But beware, short-term sellers/new sellers may be looking to unload some junk, take you for your money and then not deliver.

Shipping Policies: Some sellers will attempt to hide the shipping cost and will ultimately overcharge for shipping for extra profit. This of course is disguised as
Shipping/Handling. All sellers will charge for shipping and handling, it is the degree to which they will charge. For example, I have seen sellers charge $7.00 for
shipping a $2.00 penny with insurance being extra Always pay close attention to the shipping charges as well as the method of shipping. Some dealers will only ship UPS
adding significant cost to you. Generally speaking, insurance is not included in many transactions. Please note, it does cost dealers for the packing materials, trips
to the post office, etc. Many dealers will look to handling charges to offset some of the fees they have to pay to eBay. Sellers can pay anywhere around 10% of the
selling price for listing fees, transaction fees, final valuation fees, etc.

Return Policies: An important factor to determine before bidding on an auction is to read the fine print, especially return policies. Return policies vary from no
returns at all to full return privileges. Some sellers will offer you the option to return an item but will NOT reimburse shipping charges. If you bought a $2.00 coin
and paid $7.00 for shipping, you are out the $7.00.

Assigning a Grade: Many dealers will suggest a grade for the coin they are selling. It is easy to overgrade a coin, as you always hope for the best. Some sellers will
make statements such as “It looks like a MS-65 but I am not an expert.” Others will make a statement such as, “I am not a coin grader but it looks good to me.” Another
good one is stating they are of average circulation. Average circulation means many different things to many different people. Average circulation for Barber Halves
means they are all in AG-3 or so while average circulation for Franklin Halves would indicate they should be a higher grade as they are less worn. Be wary of these
descriptions. It is unfortunate, but many so called uncalculated coins selling on eBay are AU-55 or AU-58.

Graded Coins: Most people feel safe when buying a graded coin. The feeling is that since it is graded by a third party, I should be getting what I am bidding on. NOTE:
All grading companies are not created equal. There are some sellers on eBay that sells tons of coins that are graded MS-70. If you really research the feedback on
these items you will find out that in the opinion of many of the buyers, many of the coins are no where near MS-70. If you research further, you will find out the
seller is the person/company that also is the grading company.

Contacting the Seller: If you find a coin you want and the auction does not end for a few days; try contacting the seller for more info. Do they respond quickly and
with the information you want?

Item Description: Read the description over and over to look for the slightest deception. For example, when buying bags of wheat cents, a common statement is
“unsearched by me”. That’s great. Maybe his buddy searched them, or he bought them as searched. I would stay away from that item. Also, match the description to the
picture. People do make mistakes. If you see a picture of a Morgan Dollar with a mint mark of “S” but the description says it is a “CC”, contact the seller. If you do
not get a response, stay clear.

Photos: If you are buying a valuable coin, do not consider buying it unless there are clear pictures, for both the observe and reverse. Yes, this applies to even PCGS
graded coins. A MS-66 graded Walking Liberty Half might sound like an absolutely beautiful coin, but if it has ugly toning, maybe it is not the coin for you. Be wary
of any high value coin that does not have clear close up pictures. A trick of many bad dealers is to intentionally have pictures that are slightly out of focus or at a
bad angle to hide certain scratches or abnormalities.

Dealer Memberships: Many dealers will lay claim to belong to various clubs and organizations. Many of these claims will not guarantee that the dealer is honest. I can
claim I belong to any club I want. That does not mean that I actually belong to it. Additionally, membership in many clubs does not require anything more than an email
address. On the other hand, if the dealer claims to be a member of ANA, that could be better as ANA dealers are bound by a certain code of ethics.

Buying coins on eBay is a risky business, but by using these tips, the risk is no more than buying coins from your local dealer or by mail order. There are crooks in
the coin profession at all levels. You must be on guard at all times to protect yourself and by exercising caution, you can be assured you are getting and paying for
what you think you are.

As always, happy collection!

10 Tips For Better Photography

Posted in clothing on November 27th, 2009 by admin – Be the first to comment

Once the purchase of a digital camera is made, the beginning steps have begun as a professional photographer. Correctly handling the camera is a great tool to begin learning. The images it sends out are pretty close to perfect, but it takes a little while to get to that point. Understanding how it runs, what steps need to be learned, how to shoot indoor and outdoor pictures, or just limiting ourselves to a point-and-click style of photography are all part of knowing what to do. To not understand any of this is doing great injustice to the camera, which is made for better use. To avoid not learning, or simply not knowing, how to take a picture – we need to follow ten top shooting tips.

1. Too many novice or amateur photographers rely entirely on photo-editing tools to digitally enhance the photograph. Do not depend on this – in the back of the mind will always be the thought, “if it does not turn out, I can always fix it with software”. The pleasure of photography should begin with the way the picture is shot, along with its emotional connection, not the result of the digital manipulation with a half-done picture. There is nothing the matter with the photo-editing tools, only what we do with them to make our photos look good.

2. Underexposure lacks color quality, so it really should be avoided. What happens is the sensors fail to read the colors that form the image. However, if given a choice, several photographers choose underexposing above overexposure. This is because even if underexposed, the details of the photograph are still recorded. In addition, it can still go into an editing program over overexposed photographs.

3. Digital cameras use millions of assorted pixels to produce the final image, with each sensor designed to capture a certain tonal range. When we do not allow full light to fall on the sensor, we are doing a great injustice to the image. Most of the pixels are unable to capture the tonal range in their full sweep and brightness, which ends up lowering the picture quality. The choice of sensor size is equivalent to choosing between assortments of formats – 35mm, medium and large format cameras. There are many different sensor size options regarding depth of field, image noise, diffraction, cost and size/weight.

4. When focusing on a subject, there are three factors which affect the depth of field: focal length of the lens; distance from the camera to the subject; and the size of the aperture or setting of the f-stop. You must focus on the subject, and not on people or objects around the subject. The subject at a greater distance will have greater depth of field than one that is close-up. This will reduce the noise level in your photographs. Also, less worry needs to be given to being out of focus, bringing in clarity and sharpness to the image.

5. When a picture is overexposed, too much detail is too high in tonal range. Just as under exposure makes a picture dark and toneless, over exposure makes colors too rich giving the picture an artificial hue – causing highlight to lose their detail. Over exposures also blanks out light and dark effects, along with the tones that give an image a natural look causing everything to look gray with less saturation.

6. Exposure warning lights have a purpose – with the word “warning.” We must learn to look and respect under exposure warning lights just like a red flashing light at an intersection. These are especially good for beginners who can change the exposure until the blinking areas disappear. Later, the user can start using their own insights in deciding the exposure levels.

7. The camera can take a great picture, but we as the photographer prepare before then. The best photographs are those whose parameters are decided by the human mind. No amount of automation can change this fact. We, too, should gradually move away from automated functions and start making our own combinations when it comes to exposure, color, noise etc. Only then will we find gradual, but unmistaken, improvement in the quality of photographs taken.

8. Thinking of the composition should be the focus before clicking the button. Composition is the art of focusing on the subject using frames, movement, lights etc. We can learn composition techniques either from a senior photographer or from a book. Then we should start practicing them with new techniques. We will find an automatic improvement in the quality of our photographs.

9. To constantly improve one’s photography skills, take as many different pictures as you can – all the time. Take enough pictures that you can tell how they will turn through experience, fixing them in advance.

10. The last one tip is to think ahead, think what you want to shoot, think how it is to be shot, think about its exposure, color, noise – all about visualization. We must learn to critically examine each image that we shoot as if it were our last. Try and find out the weaknesses of the photograph. Shoot again to remove the weaknesses – until we are completely satisfied.

Digital Photography Business Ideas – How Can Use My Digital Camera To Make Money?

Posted in clothing on November 27th, 2009 by admin – Be the first to comment

A digital photo revolution caused by a steep fall in the price of digital cameras and introduction of relatively easy-to-use software has created new standards in business communications. You too should learn how to use digital photos in business if you want to make full use of the new technology. This is because photographs bring out key selling points in ways that you can never describe.

For example, it is tough to explain to a potential customer about different types of wooden doors you sell. But if you send them a few photographs, they can immediately spot the difference. An old saying, “a picture is worth a thousand words”

Today if we see a house-for-sale and there is no picture of it – we move on down the line to one that does – within seconds. Gone are the days when a printed document was used to make a sales pitch. A house-hunter today skips any online home listing which does not have photographs because he prefers to look at those sites that provide “virtual tours” of properties.

Businesses use photos in different ways such as construction companies use pre and post -project photos; in retail trade, photos of sale items or specials are used; hospitality service providers rely on photos to promote their facilities, food and events; or banking and finance companies similarly use photographs of their facilities to make a point.

Using an in-house photographer or someone that is non-professional to take them is the standard norm. Once the pictures are taken, there are three steps involved in using digital photographs for commercial purposes. The first step involves taking a digital camera and transferring the photographs into the computer. If photos from previous work or shoots are available, convert them into digital images by scanning them directly into the computer. Once they are in the computer, they are ready to be used for ads, business cards, logos, flyers, etc.

The second step requires a fairly decent editing software, to improve the image quality of the photos by using digital enhancement tools. Different software opens only certain formats, so to sync both photos and software to the same JPEG, EPS, or TIFF is needed. To edit a photos, many things can be accomplished – changing the size and shape of images, improving colors, contrast and brightness, eliminating defects, merging with another image and much more.

The third and last step involves setting the photo to whatever is needed in the business: graphic layouts, hosting the image on a website, or embedding it in a power point presentation. You can also add background music to make the presentation livelier. There are many, many different forms of business software that lays the world wide open once the digital photo is ready.

Digital stock photos are becoming a huge plus for many online businesses, magazines, direct mail materials, or commercials. A stock photo or image have already been taken by a photographer, purchasing a chosen image that is in “stock”. They are purchased for varying prices, depending on how the license is purchased. Because they are digital, and they are purchased outright from the companies, they can be manipulated, modified, or edited with editing software.

It has been proven that photos sell products, and photos with some line art or design adds to the overall theme. All of this can be purchased as stock for a “quick ad.” The digital photographs convey the products and their characteristics and ideals, creating a professional image for the business instantly.

Digital photographs are powerful marketing tools and make day-to-day business administration stronger. Color themes with “business savvy” wording that grabs attention, well-written layouts either online or in presentations. It makes good sense to incorporate digital photos in print materials such as advertisements, brochures, fliers, newsletters, reports, proposals and even business cards and letters.

Digital photos can also be used in power point or slide presentations, sent as e-mail attachments, or hosted on your company’s website or on a website where your company’s products are listed. The beginning steps of digital photographs open up the way to better business and prosperity.
